All have the unique NANTUCKET basket feature of a SOLID wood bottom and are tightly woven. They feature solid wood bases with solid wood inserts (see photo for details) - making these very stabile.

The elegant NANTUCKET BASKETS are of the Nantucket Lightship Basket style: the solid wooden disc base, the symmetrical ribbed staves, tight weaving techniques, and the use of molds to create a perfect shape that could be reproduced time after time.

This style of basketry has deep New England roots.  The US Government commissioned a ship to be a floating lighthouse in 1840 to help sailors navigate off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.  The sailors were stationed for 8 month long duties, which usually consisted of standing watch & cleaning the lamps – and to pass the time, they learned the art of basketry from the local Native American Indians.  The baskets the Indians made were lightweight & rather fragile, as they used them to gather berries, etc.  In 1890 the craft was moved to Nantucket Island, where weavers used native materials to make a sturdier, more durable basket that better suited the needs of the farming community.  They replaced the woven spider web bottoms with a bottom of solid wood.

Today, NANTUCKET baskets have become increasingly valuable and highly sought after.
