This piece of vintage costume jewelry is versatile:
it is a necklace that could also be used as a belt
(on a waist that less than 36").  It comes from the "Early Years" of Sarah Coventry Jewelry --  1949 to 1965.

This goldtone piece is 36" long and made up of alternating round open links and square closed, etched links.  The round links are shiny.  The square links have a floral pattern across them.

The piece is in excellent condition, bright and shiny, as you can see from our photos.  The etched fold over clasp works snugly but easily (without breaking a fingernail), and the piece is signed on the clasp: SARAH COV

Sarah Coventry made fine costume jewelry that was sold at home fashion shows for decades.  One of the things they prided themselves on was versatility; this piece is an example of their versatility as it can be worn by many as either a necklace or a belt.

Our family worked with the company for many years, and we still have a collection of nice pieces like this, which were used for demonstrations but were otherwise never worn.  They produced well-made jewelry with ageless appeal.  Today younger people as well as the older generations appreciate Sarah Coventry for it style, shine, and durability. 

Sarah Coventry often named their pieces;  this piece is called "Young and Gay."  It also came in silvertone and with round rather than square patterned links.  They made bracelets to match the necklaces.

Sarah Coventry jewelry is also collectible.  Books have been written about it.  The silvertone version of this necklace, with round links, is shown on page 46 of Kay Oshel's 2003 book SARAH COVENTRY JEWELRY.
