In this collection of previously unpublished color and black and white photographs, with notes in English and Portuguese, Ralph Gibson explores Brazil on intimate terms, eschewing spectacles like Carnivale for more day-to-day images of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, beaches and markets, vibrant sunlight in the day and humid streets at night. To be sure, there are a few beautiful bodies at the beach here, but also an abstract study of vivid paint and a rusty anchor on a fishing boat; platters of fresh melon; the archway of a church; the neck of a Spanish guitar; the white dress of a woman, clinging damply to her. In the witty shot of a man whose head is seemingly replaced by a soccer ball, Gibson nods to his taste for Surrealism by evoking Magritte
