Detailed item info
Synopsis
Martha Burk made headlines in 2002 when, as head of the National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO), she called on the Augusta National Golf Club to admit women as members; when that failed she called on the corporate sponsors of the famous Augusta National to use their influence. Though some spoke up, and some withdrew, the issue did not go in Burk's favor. In CULT OF POWER, Ms. Burk recalls that experience, as she lays out the arguments and makes her case. She describes the shocking responses to her efforts, which ran from ignoring her, to denying her argument, to outright ridicule--and even to death threats. The Augusta National Golf Club was for Ms. Burk a very public symbol of the pervasive and pernicious gender discrimination that is a significant factor in preventing capable women from having an equal chance of advancement in corporate America. She demonstrates the importance of rituals like golf, and shows how denying women membership closes them off from access to equal opportunities. She also shares horror stories of how women were treated when they tried to attend corporate meetings at facilities in private clubs; sometimes they even had to enter through a back door, or could not enter unescorted by a male. If the response from many was the befogged "What do women want?" the response from the Burkean side would be "They still don't get it." CULT OF POWER is about more than golf; it is about power, access to power, and speaking truth to power.

Publisher's Note
An analysis of how discrimination against women is reflected by the attitudes of the nation's premier golf club reveals how it is led by men who appear to support equality in their workplaces but conduct private campaigns of ostracism within the club, arguing that the club's no-women stance perpetuates systems of gender discrimination.

Industry reviews
"With a terrific story on which to hang her recommendations, Burk achieves a rare hybrid of activism and entertainment."
Publishers Weekly  (03/07/2005)

"The coherent exploration of the psyches of the powerful is one of the many achievements of this book."
New York Times Book Review - Suzy Hansen (07/17/2005)
