Detailed item info
Synopsis
In this voter guide to the 2004 presidential election, George Lakoff, a highly respected political theorist, explains what makes voters vote, and issues a wakeup call to progressives to heed his warnings and learn to play the high-stakes game of politics. A linguist and cognitive scientist, Lakoff has had tremendous impact far beyond those disciplines. His previous work, MORAL POLITICS, introduced the idea that conservatives and liberals have different worldviews, and that voters think in terms of metaphors: they do not vote on issues or personalities, they vote because of language. Lakoff says that conservatives understand this, and that the right wing succeeds by controlling the debate, using an appeal to values and by framing things in terms of the metaphor of the family. In DON'T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT, Lakoff, in a more overt manner, applies his thesis specifically to George W. Bush, whom he sees as a worst-nightmare-come-true example of what he theorized about in the 1990s. Lakoff shows how, using "Orwellian language tricks" (tax cuts are called "tax relief"), Bush & Co. have virtually hijacked whole areas of debate, such as terrorism and 9/11, and made them their own. It is futile, Lakoff claims, to argue on their terms. Instead, he exhorts the left to learn what the conservatives already know, and to frame the debate on their own terms, pointing out that the authoritarian metaphor offered by the right appeals to many but by no means all voters: progressives should play to their strengths, and offer a counter frame--that of the nurturing family--which embodies truly progressive values. Lakoff believes his strategy will attract a large segment of voters and keep the Democratic party on its course.
