Publisher's Note
This biography examines the life and legacy of Frederick Jackson Turner. Best known for his 1893 essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" - the most enduring explanation of our national development - Turner was a leader in establishing the field of western American history and in shaping the broader history discipline. Placing Turner's ideas in the context both of his own times and of current historiography, Allan G. Bogue elucidates his far-reaching influence as thinker, scholar, mentor, and teacher. Weaving together accounts of Turner's personal and professional life, Bogue addresses intriguing questions: Why did Turner fail to produce that great work of substantive research on which he labored for more than half his career? And why have his ideas inspired so much debate and controversy, even to this day?

Industry reviews
[This] study has an excellent grounding in the workings and development of the historical profession at the turn of the 20th century. One of Bogue's central motifs is Turner's failure to follow up his provocative early frontier essay with substantial books. There is less emphasis on analyzing the controversial historical interpretations for which Turner is famous, though Bogue does make a good case for paying more attention to Turner's later work on sectionalism and less to the seemingly endless frontier controversy. Despite the strength of this book, it is not obvious that it was necessary or badly needed. It breaks little new ground. . . . Still, this is now the best, most balanced, and thorough single volume available on Turner, arguably the foremost historian that the US has yet produced. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
Blaser

Bogue (emeritus, history, Univ. of Wisconsin) joins important Turner biographers like Ray A. Billington (The Frontier Thesis, 1997) with this many-faceted study. . . . [Turner's] famous essay of 1893, 'The Significance of the Frontier in American History,' was praised by such Progressive-era contemporaries as Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt. . . . Taking up the charge of Turner's critics that he failed to produce enough significant works and did not achieve his full potential, Bogue shows how Turner's great oratorical skills, knowledge of literature and culture, and respect for the common man increased his popularity. Recommended for public and academic collections. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
