This book is about the spectacular end to the life of an ordinary star in our neighbour galaxy which exploded as a supernova in 1987. This was the first supernova to be visible to the eye for 400 years, and although 170000 light years away, it was the nearest star-death to be studied by modern scientific equipment. The book tells how the supernova was discovered, how astronomers turned every possible telescope toward it and how they struggled with what they saw. Sometimes they were very successful with their interpretations; sometimes less so. As the author says, science is what scientists do, so this is a human story as well as a scientific one. The book goes on to give the complete story behind the supernova, one of the most powerful explosioins ever witnessed. For example, two dozen neutrinos, the least interactive fundamental particles, were captured out of the million million million million million million million million million million which the supernova released, revealing its enormous power which for a moment rivalled the power of all the stars in the universe. The author deals in an unabashed way with the superlatives which an account of the supernova inevitably needs, and explains its scientific properties.
