  Hand-Printed Silk Shawl 19th Century Reproduction Exclusively From Heritage Trading Company This is a remarkably faithful reproduction of a 19th Century shawl. Like the original, it was hand block printed on tussah silk in India, using traditional methods. The artisans we work with carved new wooden blocks to match the original shawl's design. The colors—red, dark olive, and black on a champagne background—are virtually identical to the original, as well. We've increased the size slightly to make it a generous 55 by 55 inches (140 by 140 centimeters).
In India, the Rajasthani village of Sanganer has been known for its block print textiles since the 18th century. Hand carved wooden blocks are dipped in dye and stamped onto the stretched cloth. This process must be repeated for each color in the printed pattern. The work is done in small, family-run studios.
Hand block-printed fabrics with traditional Indian designs have been imported fashion favorites in Western countries since as early as the 17th century. With its historic background, this block print shawl may be just what you need for your SCA, LARP, SASS, Civil War, Victorian, Dickens, reenactor, or other reproduction, period costume.

This fabric is brand new, not "vintage." In other words, it's not used, damaged, or dirty. It is, however, folk art. Because of the way it's produced, the pattern is not perfectly uniform and there may be some errant spots of dye. That's the nature—and indeed the charm—of individually hand printed textiles.
