Synopsis
Everyone dreams of finding the perfect someone, but once that near-impossible dream is realized, it's important to realize that the battle to keep that love alive involves plenty of maintenance. Lines of communication can get crossed, and even the most precious blossom can wither without just the right balance of adaptation, mutual respect, and unconditional affection. Markman's experience as a psychologist and researcher has shown him that these are the main areas where marriages fail. Making oneself understood clearly in conversation can be difficult, as is respecting a marriage partner's individuality rather than fretting about what an imagined soul mate "should" be. There are plenty of funny cartoons and sample dialogue exchanges in here, which couples can read aloud together--even if the dialogues are read as a joke they will almost certainly work to open up communication as promised. Each new thought is summed up in bold print in a text box, making this an easy book for thumbing through to find favorite passages for reference or to read aloud, preferably in bed or on a blanket in the park.

Publisher's Note
A completely revised new edition of the best-selling classic on marriage enhancement and divorce prevention, featuring the latest research and changes of heart in our culture and society.
This new and revised edition of Fighting for Your Marriage is based on the widely acclaimed PREP® (Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program) approach. Groundbreaking studies have found that couples can use the strategies of this approach to handle conflict more constructively, protect their happiness, and reduce the odds of breaking up.

Based on twenty years of university research, this popular book will show you how to:
  • Talk more and fight less
  • Deepen and protect your friendship
  • Have a more intimate, sensual relationship
  • Keep the fun alive
  • Clarify and act on your priorities
  • Develop a vision for your future together

Industry reviews
To this new edition (the original came out in 1994), the authors have added current research on marriage and societal changes. At its core, however, remains the program that Markman and Scott Stanley, codirectors of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver, created to help couples overcome nuptial difficulties: the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP). Based on empirical research, PREP emphasizes teaching couples to handle conflict better by using the speaker-listener technique, which involves having one person speak at a time while the other actively listens. Because of the authors' unfortunate attempts at humor and some rather unncessary and slapdash-looking cartoon, this is perhaps not to most appealing manual on the subject. Nonetheless, it's still recommended for public and social work libraries owing to the tried-and-true methodology it explains. (<I>Library Journal</I>, November 15, 2001) <p> "Just about everyone can improve their marriage.... They can learn skills to help them handle negative emotions in marriage. It's the discord that hurts kids," (<i>USA Today</i>, December 13, 2001) <p> "…Finally, 'Staying the Course' deals with marriage maintenance and has excellent chapters on the need for realistic expectations and forgiveness; the latter includes an imaginative programme-one of the book's many excellent exercises-to make it a practical reality. Highly recommended…" (Sexual & Relationship Therapy, Vol.17, No. 4, 2002)
