Synopsis
One of the most highly respected fantasy novels ever written, THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE can be seen as both an exciting children's adventure story and an allegory about faith. The story begins when the Pevensie siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) escape the dangers of World War II-era London by relocating to the country home of family friend Professor Kirke. One day, while playing hide-and-seek, Lucy hides in an old wardrobe and finds herself transported to the world of Narnia, a magical land frozen in eternal winter by the evil White Witch. With the help of her siblings, Lucy sets forth to free Narnia from the White Witch's reign by bringing about the return of Narnia's guardian, Aslan the lion, a quest impeded by a shocking betrayal. Although THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE was the first of the Chronicles of Narnia to be published, many readers prefer to begin the series with THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW (the sixth book published), because it describes the history of Narnia and sets the stage for the adventures of the Pevensie siblings. THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE has been adapted for the screen several times, including two live-action British TV productions (1967 and 1988), a British/American animated TV movie, and a big Hollywood film in 2005.

Publisher's Note
First Lucy, then Edmund, Susan, and Peter discover that through the wardrobe lies the enchanted land of Narnia. This classic story is now brought vividly to life through glowing full-page color illustrations in the most exciting and magical adventure ever written.

Industry reviews
Gr 3-5 Lawrie has successfully translated Lewis's introductory volume of the ``Chronicles of Narnia'' (HarperCollins) into a kind of elegant, Edwardian comic book. The 17 chapters of the original have been reduced to 7. Remarkably, this is a true abridgement of Lewis's writing, with his words, particularly the dialogue, faithfully preserved. Only the name of the great wolf who serves the wicked queen has been changed. Neatly framed speech balloons vie for space with hand-printed sections of descriptive paragraphs. The large, parchment-colored pages burst exuberantly with colorful drawings of the four children and the animals they meet beyond the wardrobe. Each one is framed with decorative columns, vines, borders, or flowering plants, appropriate to the adventures they enclose. Something is lost, of course, in the use of pictures on a page rather than mental pictures produced by reading the novel. But children who might never be drawn to the full-length book will certainly be attracted to this charming, action-filled version, and, as often happens, readers of the abridged story may well turn to the original to recapture their delight.
