Starry Night by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh is the most
renowned achievement of his illustrious and remarkably short career. In the time
span of only 8 years (1880-1890), van Gogh produced more than 2,000 drawings and
paintings. Today, scholars and art enthusiasts alike continue to analyze,
debate, and ponder the tormented spirit of this eccentric genius and this
depiction of the village of Saint-Remy. In contrast, 19th century European
society of van Gogh's own time was not ready to accept his truthful and
emotionally morbid way of depicting his art subjects. Nonetheless, his internal
turbulence clearly seen in most of his work set the stage for a new style of
painting called Expressionism. Vincent van Gogh was in search of the ultimate
"truth", and once wrote in a letter, "...art is something greater
and higher than our own adroitness or accomplishments or knowledge."
