Text from PSALM 24 (King James 25)!
“To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed. Neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on thee shall be confounded...”


IM-8725: A very fine original leaf from a miniature medieval manuscript Book of Hours. Fifteen lines of ruled text, written on both sides in Latin with dark brown ink and red rubrics in fine rounded gothic script on animal vellum. This leaf measures 116 x 87 mm (4 1/2 x 3 7/16”).

ONE TWO-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIAL IN DEEP BLUE WITH INTRICATE RED PENWORK INTERNALLY AND EXTENDING THE LENGTH OF THE MARGIN. ELEVEN ONE-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIALS ALTERNATING IN RED AND DEEP BLUE.

This Book of Hours leaf was scribed in Italy, c. 1460-80. Italian Books of Hours are relatively scarce – this one was probably used by a lady. This is an original, not a reproduction and it is in excellent condition as shown in the photos. There is also a slight bit of staining to the vellum and wear to the text on this leaf, entirely consistent with its age and use.

The two-line illuminated “A” begins Psalm 24 (King James 25) 1-10: “Ad te levavi…” (To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed. Neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on thee shall be confounded. Let them be confounded that act unjust things without cause. Show, O Lord, thy ways to me, and teach me thy paths. Direct me in thy truth, and teach me; for thou art God my Savior; and on thee have I waited all the day long...).
