c.1886 Cologne Cathedral Germany Nave Interior Photogravure

You are bidding on a rare, 100% authentic 1886 photogravure print of "Cologne Cathedral, Nave," by Fred Hovey Allen (1845–1926) best known as the creator of the first photogravure plates for art reproduction in America. Cologne Cathedral, also known as Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria, was begun in 1248 and finished, after many interruptions, in 1880, 632 years after construction began. The Nave measures 43.35 meters high, or 142.2 feet. The cathedral was hit by over seventy bombs during World War II, but did not fall. The interior was also used as a rifle range by American troops. The plate was printed by the "International Art Publishing Company," from negatives by the author or taken under his supervision. This VERY rare and unique photogravure is from "The Great Cathedrals of the World," Volume I, published by Haskell and Post of Boston in 1886. The image is printed on heavy cream colored paper, and the imprint of the printing block is clearly visible. Immediately below the image, in the lower left is printed Photogravure, International Art Publishing Co., and Haskell & Post, Publishers, Boston, on the right. The title of the image is in fancy script in the center. 1886 is the one, and only time this folio was printed.

The overall condition of this 123+ year-old photogravure is Very Fine++, with excellent contrast and print saturation. There is VERY SLIGHT toning and yellowing, which is to be expected from a photogravure of this age. There is SLIGHT surface rub, and very SLIGHT foxing. Clean crisp edges, no tears, no creases. The photogravure comes with it's original tissue covering, most of which are in various states of condition, not however, affecting the image. The overall printing block size is approximately 13" x 9". The overall print size is approximately 15" x 11". Please note that the image shown here may be enlarged to show detail; depending on your monitor's resolution, it might appear larger than the actual size of the print. The photogravure provides an excellent opportunity for the European Cathedrals/ Cologne, Germany/ Architecture/ Ecclesiastical Architecture/ Fred Hovey Allen/ International Art Publishing Company/ Haskell and Post/ Photogravure/ Victorian Prints/ Pre-Twentieth Century Photography collector. Or it would make a generous gift.
