The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction print of a 1894s theater poster for Too Much Johnson, written by renowned actor, William Gillette. We love posters that have a story and this has a story about it and beyond it. William Gillette was not only a famous actor of his day; he contributed to acting technique and had influence on both Orson Welles and John Houseman of the Mercury Theater. Gillette also created the first Sherlock Holmes on stage and wrote a book on acting. He was a handsome man with a big moustache and played leading men well into his fifties. Too Much Johnson concerns a trip to Cuba by and American businessman, his wife and mother-in-law. The wife discovers an embarrassing letter in the husband’s possession. When she confronts him, he lies and says a man named Johnson (who doesn’t exist) wrote it. Upon arrival in Cuba, lo and behold, there is a real man named Johnson, which sets up the title and a series of comedic episodes. This poster features two men about to fight. A woman is asking a man seated on a box: Are they going to fight? It looks like it. The play was popular and Gillette played the role in New York and on tour. His manager and producer was Charles Frohman. Donald Crisp directed a 1920s silent movie based on the play. However, the history does not stop there. In the 1930s The Mercury Theater, operated by Orson Welles and John Houseman, produced a version of the play. At the time Welles was experimenting with including film in live theater productions and produced a silent movie to open the play, which starred Joseph Cotton and Arlene Francis. He never used it in the play nor was it ever released. The only copy was destroyed in a fire in Madrid in 1970. Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York did the original lithograph upon which this new print is based. ![]() PAPER QUALITY: This new print is on a highest quality, acid-free, 100-pound glossy premium text paper that allows for maximum color brilliance and fidelity for older images.
