Young Finley left his wife and children in Iowa on May 12, 1850 and set off for the gold fields of California. The text consists of seventeen letters written by the author in 1850 and 1851. The author was one more man who traveled to California via the Oregon-California Trail, hoping to get rich by mining. The letters go into considerable detail about overland travel and California mining at the time. The text is reset directly from the old penmanship which was difficult to read and fascinating from which to work.
