Something of an oddity in this great jazz and pop performer's canon, this late-1950s pairing of Nat "King" Cole and the Chicago-based Choir of the First Church of Deliverance nevertheless presents these two musical institutions at the height of their powers. The Choir's innovations included being the first African-American congregation to broadcast its services live on TV, and this collection of gospel standards, including such classics as "Oh Mary Don't You Weep" and "Steal Away" is a testament to both its popularity and its full-throated musicality. This reissue also includes Cole performing six more conventional religious songs accompanied by tastefully arranged strings.
