THEODORE PRESSER CO.
THE ETUDE MUSIC MAGAZINE described itself as "A monthly journal for the musician, the music student, and all music lovers." It was about music, musical performance, and the singers, players, and musicians who fill our lives with joy, sorrow, and entertainment. It was heavily oriented toward classical music and its study plus instruction in its performance and technique.
The magazines are very collectible. Some collect them for the cover art.
The magazine was published as THE ETUDE AND MUSICAL WORLD from 1896-1897, as THE ETUDE from 1897 to 1922, as THE ETUDE MUSIC MAGAZINE from 1922 to 1948, and as simply ETUDE from 1948 to 1957.
This January, 1939, issue has interesting articles on overcoming stage fright, and the men of the orchestra, and on instructional topics such as aids to sight reading and care of the violin. There is an article on the "Moonlight Sonata" Did you know that Beethoven didn't name it?
There are also musical pieces in the magazine:
Fascinating Pieces for the Musical Home, including "March of the Clowns"
Master Works by Chopin and Bach-Burmeister
Outstanding Vocal and Instrumental Novelties, including "Gondoliere" and "Birds in the Branches" for four hands
Delightful Pieces for Junior Etude Readers, including "Jack Frost Waltz" and "Raindrops"
This 13" by 10 1/2" magazine is in good condition for age. It's 70 years old and fragile--printed on lightweight war-time paper, not like the durable glossy pages of today's magazines.
The front cover remains attached by the upper of 3 paper clips; it has edgewear and a worn spot from a sticker, but the charming photo of children at the piano remains largely untouched, with some faint tinting remaining. The pages are firmly bound. The ones containing sheet music each have a tear at the side, up to 2" long. One page has been creased, and one has a red check mark. Otherwise they are cleaning of writing, highlighting, underlining, and other markings.
