THE JOHN CHURCH COMPANY, THEODORE PRESSER CO., DISTRIBUTORS
THE ETUDE MUSIC MAGAZINE described itself as "A monthly journal for the musician, the music student, and all music lovers." It was about music, musical performance, and the singers, players, and musicians who fill our lives with joy, sorrow, and entertainment. It was heavily oriented toward classical music and its study plus instruction in its performance and technique.
The magazines are very collectible. Some collect them for the cover art.
The magazine was published as THE ETUDE AND MUSICAL WORLD from 1896-1897, as THE ETUDE from 1897 to 1922, as THE ETUDE MUSIC MAGAZINE from 1922 to 1948, and as simply ETUDE from 1948 to 1957.
This February, 1939, issue has interesting articles on "Worth While Music in the Movies" and "Music's Debt to Shakespeare", and instructional topics such as hand position in violoncello playing and giving the accordion proper care.
There are also musical pieces in the magazine:
Fascinating Pieces for the Musical Home, including "Frosty Morning" and "Scherzo"
Master Works by Haydn and Henselt
Outstanding Vocal and Instrumental Novelties, including "By the Lake of Gennesaret" for organ and "Mazurka" for four hands
Delightful Pieces for Junior Etude Readers, including "The March of the Tin Soldiers" and "The Valentine"
This magazine is 70 years old and fragile. It's printed on lightweight wartime paper, not like the sturdy glossy pages of today's magazines.
The cover of this magazine has been torn from the staples and is in two pieces but otherwise intact and colorful with the red around the heart, which is filled with children's photos; it has a crease at the lower right and some edgewear including small (less than 1") tears. This 13" by 10 1/2" magazine is otherwise in good condition for age. The pages are firmly bound. They have aging and some have small tears (about 1/4" or less). I do not find any writing, highlighting, underlining, or other markings on the pages.
Please see the photos. We do not use stock photos; the magazine you see is the magazine you get.
