FRANCE Parachutist Commando Georges Local Algerian War

A mint condition example of an original pocket crest for the French Army Commando Georges, a famed organization of the Algerian colonial war era. This old badge is an Algerian made variation, rather think metal construction.  This insignia is a variant ident No. 80-5/9 in Baltzer & Micheletti’s “French Airborne Troops Wings & Insignia” and but is ident No. G-9 in Lafleur and Pugh's “Insignia of the French Commandos - WW2 to Present”.

    In January 9959, Colonel Bigeard took command of the Sidon area, near the Moroccan border.  At the time the French forces were providing little protection to the area and suffering constant losses.  The first step to bring the insurgents under control was the creation of Commando GEORGES, under LT. Drillot, composed of former guerrillas and Muslim (Harka) fighters.  Utilizing the tactics they had learned in Indochina, within weeks they established a reputation as an effective combat unit.  Based on this formula, Commando COBRA was created under the command of LT GAGET, a 200 man unit with Muslim volunteers.  As the OAS came into existence, the two commandos refused to join and on 23 April 1962, Commando GEORGES was deactivated.
