This auction is for an 1895 original edition of "Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin's" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1895. 1page ad in front and 16 ppg's of publishers ads in the rear dated 1895-96. 83 Pages. Measures 7 x 8 1/2" tall. Original tan pictorial cloth with red, black, and gilt decorations on the cover and spine, title in black lettering. Illustrated with a black and white frontispiece and five full-page black and white illustrations, plus text illustrations by Reginald B. Birch.

 

Frances Hodgson Burnett (November 24, 1849 – October 29, 1924) was an English–American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and Little Lord Fauntleroy. She was born Frances Eliza Hodgson (also known as Frances "Hopey" Benson) in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England. Her father died in 1854, leaving her mother to support five children. They had to endure poverty and squalor in the Victorian slums of Manchester.

 

The story told in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel, A Little Princess, was first written as a serialized novella, "Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin’s", and published in St. Nicholas Magazine, in 1888. It tells the story of Sara Crewe, an intelligent, wealthy, young girl at Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies. Sara’s fortunes change when her father dies, and she goes from being a show pupil and parlor boarder at the school to a drudge, but eventually she finds happiness and a home again. This copy is in good, used condition. The boards are lightly soiled. Corners are bumped. The front hinge is cracked. Front endpaper is detached but present, with previous owners name and date 1896. The pages are are a bit toned with some smudge marks. The text has no writing or markings other than the smudge marks. There are no torn or missing pages, other than the front endpaper. An excellent addition to a library or collection.
