For his fourth solo release, and third on the Evidence label, the Fabulous Thunderbirds' guitarist, Kid Ramos, once again calls in some high-profile blues friends for assistance. Instead of last album's guitarists and jump blues horns, this time Ramos sticks with harpists/vocalists to provide the momentum on a set of relatively stripped-down, greasy blues. He's also the only guitarist on the sessions, which makes this a spotlight for his picking as well as his bandleading abilities. Harmonica aces Rick Estrin (Little Charlie & the Nightcats), Paul de Lay, Lynwood Slim, Johnny Dyer, James Harman (who only plays on one of his three tracks and sings on the others), and Charlie Musselwhite, along with Rod Piazza, all contribute. The leadoff title cut, an instrumental that sounds like it was left over from his last horn-infused West Coast album, is the one exception. The sessions were cut in two days, which gives them a raw, not quite primal edge that adds to the gritty nature of the recording. Although the original intent was to perform exclusively covers, nearly all the harp-playing guests brought in their own original material. Just a handful of interpretations remain: Willie Dixon's "I Don't Care Who Knows"; an obscure Lightnin' Slim track, "Mean Ol' Lonesome Train"; an old uncredited Excello side, "Rich Man's Woman"; and Bobby Blue Bland's "Hold Me Tenderly." It sure sounds like this was one big part, as each guest plays with a relaxed gusto, whipping off harp lines with nonchalant intensity. Ramos' tough yet flexible guitar fills the holes and takes the lead just often enough so the listener knows whose album it is. Otherwise he's content to leave the majority of the spotlight to his high-profile guests, who turn in sterling performances. While few of their original tunes sound drastically different from standard blues fare, the ensemble playing and electrified atmosphere adds a palpable excitement to the tracks. The various vocals also infuse a diverse feel to the album, with Ramos' guitar and presence being the thread that holds it together. The closing "Harmonica Hangover" features Estrin and Musselwhite on what seems to be an improvised duet, with both harp men discussing the proceedings and other guests, as well as trading licks on an appropriately upbeat shuffle. It's a fitting finale to an album that works because of the loosely structured environment that Ramos provides, meshed with the remarkable talents of his talented contributors.

California guitar star Kid Ramos struts his stuff on his third solo album, stepping out of his West Coast jump-blues persona for a harmonica-heavy session aimed at recapturing the hard-edged interplay of early electric Chicago blues. A veteran of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and the James Harman Band, Ramos has significant assistance from more than a half-dozen guest vocalists-harpists, including Charlie Musselwhite, Paul deLay, and Rod Piazza; all make noteworthy contributions. Ramos and his stellar supporting cast nail the Windy City sound with enjoyable authority, but some of the most entertaining music goes in other directions. Ramos's radically reconfigured take on Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Hold Me Tenderly" creatively infuses a restrained rockabilly feel, and Piazza's jazz-inflected instrumental "Devil's Foot" also successfully strays from the Chicago style. Rick Estrin, of Little Charlie & the Nightcats, shines on "Marion's Mood," a reed-rattling harp showcase in the spirit of the legendary Little Walter, and Johnny Dyer delivers a fine and funky version of Lightnin' Slim's "Mean Old Lonesome Train." Harman's novelty number, "Low Down Woman," is an eccentric gem, and he rips through "Chicken Hearted Woman," with some poultry-plucking guitar from Ramos, in similarly offbeat fashion. --Michael Point

Exellent west coast blues sessions by Kid & his gang..., July 1, 2005
By  overflowing with prosperity - See all my reviews
Kid Ramos rounds up his usual suspects such as vocalist/harp master Lynwood Slim for this great session. Actual this cd features the regular Kid Ramos Quartet you see in Long Beach clubs, with a plethora of special guests and occasional honking saxes, and horn sections. This is some greasy late 40's-mid 50's sounding jump blues. Ramos' greasy jazz drenched guitar licks are the main feature throughtout this spectacular set of the west coasts prime blues players. It prooves the west coast is the best coast, at least as far as the retro jump blues scene goes. Also of note Ramos is able to play in a variety of styles from Johnny Guitar Watson to Link Wray, and rockabilly roots style(think 50's Sun records!!!). Great stuff, but mostyl danceable rockin' jump swing/blues. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

 Good Disc, April 23, 2002
By  "jeffb47" (Northern CA) - See all my reviews
I've been a big James Harman fan for a long time. I used to see him with guitarist Kid Ramos in smokey clubs in LA with 50 people or so. Great shows. I bought this because I was interested in what Kid Ramos could do on his own. Well, I still don't really know. His guitar work is sort of lost on this disc He only wrote one of the songs and quite frankly he is mearly a backup guitarist to a pretty amazing showcase of great blues front-men/harp players. When the guitar does kick in it's fine but nothing special, just standard blues riffs. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

 Refreshing, December 17, 2001
By  Chris Winter (Littleton, Colorado United States) - See all my reviews
This is a fine CD! There is a variety of styles without any weak tracks. Some damn fine musicianship on all tracks. Great singing, harp playing, guitar playing, etc. My favorite track is the title track, Greasy Kid Stuff. Kid Ramos has a really cool tone on that one. He has great tone on all songs, but that one stands out. Devil's Foot is way cool too. Somewhat unusual. Buy this one! You won't be sorry, unless you're weak.  Kid's rhythm & blues review, November 9, 2001
By  Bergman Jonas (Sweden) - See all my reviews

Kid Ramos is going from strength to strength, and with this 4th solo outing he is finally establishing himself as the master of "friends"-albums. His partners in crime on this album includes harmonica players/ singers Charlie Musselwhite, Rick Estrin, James Harman, Rod Piazza, Johnny Dyer, Lynwood Slim and Paul DeLay. With the exception of Charlie, James and Lynwood he has never recorded with these artists before. Despite the title - this album follows in the footsteps of his former 2 releases with focus on old style rhythm & blues, some songs with the addition of horns. Kid has hammered out stinging and low-down guitar over many years now but he is clearly coming out in his own right with this CD! The result shows what an excellent backup he is to harmonica players and how he propels the music on every track through his trademark licks. He gets to play more rock-oriented guitar with the latest Fabulous Thunderbirds lineup but here he is solely dedicated to true rockin blues! It is a sheer joy to hear Rick Estrin and Kid doing the tribute to Little Walter on "Marion's mood" and Paul DeLay's r&b fuelled "Holler" - to James Harman's vocal prowess on 3 tracks! The only mishap on this recording is the way that the bass is so low in the mix that most normal Hi-Fi systems will have a problem to pick it up. As I would have thought it has to do with the fact it is supposed to sound vintage, it could have had slightly more distinctive sound. Despite this minor sentiment - make no doubt about it - this is an album that demands to be heard and definitely one of the very best in 2001! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

 Low down....runnin down the road...blues baby, October 13, 2001
By  Jim Abt (Wausau, Wi.) - See all my reviews
Ok everyone...this is it....it is done. The Kid has the winner that he should have had at the Handy Awards on his last effort. This is the one! My gawd....blues has not been this good on a single release ever. With so much smooth help from heavies like Charlie Musselwhite, Rich Estrin, James Harman and the great Rod Piazza this copulation would make Willie Dixon envious. There is no doubt about the one eye slant presence that Kid has in the blues community. What other artist in that genre, or any other for that matter, can pen his name to the cover of an album that can put together such a party? I have been collecting music since the radio was a transistor and an ear piece hanging from a cheap white string and I have never heard or seen anything like it. You can only wish that you could go to this party in person. I want to tell you guys, though, that buying and listening to this is as close as that can get. Thank you, Kid and freinds. I have said it once and I will say it again, please keep it up....I'm a buyin'. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Good Basic Blues!, October 10, 2001
By  deepbluereview "deepbluereview" (SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA USA) - See all my reviews

On this CD, Ramos continues the trend set on his last two releases, "Kid Ramos" and "West Coast House Party" by inviting several guest performers. However, unlike either of the other releases, Ramos has eliminated the keyboards as well as the horn section and has invited only harp players to the party opting to handle all guitar duties himself.
Accompanying Ramos are Paul deLay, Johnny Dyer, Rick Estrin, James Harman, Charlie Musselwhite, Rod Piazza and Lynwood Slim. The result is an excellent stripped down performance, which recalls early Chicago blues in the style of Jimmy Roger, early Muddy Waters or Mojo Buford, and yet still retains the flavor of each performers unique style. Overall this is a very good CD and all songs, with the possible exception of the rockabilly number "Hold Me Tenderly", mesh well together. If you like harps and down home blues, check this out.

HISTORY-BIOGRAPHIES-

Born on January 13, 1959, in Fullerton, CA, blues-rock guitarist David "Kid" Ramos inherited his love of music from his parents, who were both professional opera singers. When his father grew tired of life on the road, he settled down with his family, buying a gas station in Anaheim. One day, when Kid was eight, he bought his son an electric guitar and amplifier from a customer passing through. By his teenaged years, Ramos was playing friend's parties and nightclubs on a regular basis, joining harmonica expert James Harman's blues-based band in 1980 (all its members sported sharkskin suits), playing up and down California alongside such punk bands as X, Oingo Boingo, the Blasters, and the Plimsouls. Kid played with the Harman Band for most of the '80s, until his departure in 1988, and although he filled in as the guitarist for the outfit Roomful of Blues, decided to put his musical career on the backburner to focus on his home life and start a family (for the next seven years, Ramos was employed as a water delivery man).

Eventually though, his desire to play music returned and Ramos formed the Big Rhythm Combo with singer Lynwood Slim (issuing The Big Rhythm Combo in 1994), in addition to releasing his first-ever solo album, Two Hands One Heart, in 1995. The same year, Ramos was invited to join one of his favorite all-time bands, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, at the personal request of their singer, Kim Wilson. Ramos promptly accepted and he returned back to the road. In addition to his work with the T-Birds, Ramos has continued to issue solo albums on a regular basis, including 1999's self-titled sophomore effort, 2000's West Coast House Party, and 2001's Greasy Kid's Stuff.
