THE BARSTOW AREA

The Barstow area includes the communities of Barstow, Daggett, Fort Irwin, Hinkley, Lenwood, Newberry Springs, and Yermo and has a total population of nearly 60,000 residents.

The Barstow and Newberry Springs area is situated approximately 134 miles east of Los Angeles and 152 miles south-west of Las Vegas in what is know as Southern California’s Mojave Desert and is commonly referred to as the High Desert.

Barstow and Newberry Springs are both located near Interstates 15 and 40 as well as California Highways 58 and 247. Because of the easy access to freeways, the Barstow area is recognized as a major transportation hub and is acknowledged as a city of diversity and growth. That growth includes more than 1200 acres of city limits zoned for light and heavy industry ranging in size from 1 to 200 acres.

Agriculture is a significant factor in The Greater Barstow Area economy. There are over 20,000 acres under cultivation to a variety of crops. Modern irrigation techniques are fast taking over and more than 50 circular center pivot irrigation systems operate near Barstow.

The Barstow area offers organized sports programs such as Little League Baseball, youth football and soccer and a locally sponsored basketball league.

The sports park has 6 ball fields, 2 soccer fields, and a covered roller hockey arena. And a BMX park is located adjacent to the sports park.

Unlimited recreational activities await you from rock climbing, BMX and off-roading to horseback riding and tennis and golf.

A short distance from the Barstow area you’ll experience Calico Ghost Town where you can relive the early days of the “Wild West”. The Early Man site dates back 50,000 years where you can take a guided tour to learn the basics of archeology. At Rainbow Basin – a geological formation more than 50 million years old – you’ll discover scenic beauty and well preserved fossils.

The Barstow area is located 2,142 feet above sea level and provides a dry and relatively smog free environment. Temperatures range from as high as 110 in the summer to as low as 35 in the winter with an annual rainfall of approximately 3.88 inches.

THE LUCERNE AREA

Lucerne is a unique area with an extraordinary variety of plants and animals, a rich cultural history, unusual geologic features, and endless opportunities for exploration. For the outdoor enthusiast, the mild winter climate affords opportunities for adventure, including bicycling, rock-climbing, camping, hiking and backpacking. For the animal lover, the area offers the chance to observe many species of wildlife. The area is home to various birds, rabbits, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, bobcats, deer, coyote, and fox. The weather in Joshua Tree is typically clear with average humidity below 25%. Average temperatures range from 50-85 degrees F in the spring and fall; 60 degrees F to freezing in the winter, with occasional snow in the higher elevations; and 75-100 degrees F in the summer.

The fascinating high/low desert contrast of the Lucerne region is due to the convergence of two deserts. The lower Colorado Desert consists mainly of creosote bushes, and ocotillo and cholla cacti. The entire region offers clear skies, clean air, and the peace & tranquility of desert life.
