Hardcover with Dust Jacket
On September 19, 1962, the Nina II, an authentic replica of the smallest of Columbus' caravels, set sail for the New World from Spain. It was a daring exploit, for the crew of nine men were determined to go exactly as Columbus had, to find out how mariners of Columbus' time lived on board their sailing ships. Not only was the ship itself as authentic in design and construction as they could make it, the men also decided they would eat the same kinds of food and navigate with fifteenth century instruments.
Trouble began almost immediately. Like Columbus, they were harried by delays in sailing. Only days after leaving land much of their food had spoiled, and soon the water supply became so foul they could hardly drink it. The tiny forty-two-foot ship, hit by a hurricane began to leak. Blown off course, buffeted by storms, or drifting for weeks in the calms of the Sargasso Sea, the Nina II and her crew were almost given up for lost. And then, on Christmas night, ninety-seven days after her departure from Palos, Spain the Nina II reached Columbus' landfall San Salvador.
This book, written especially for young people and based on the log kept by the ship's navigator and the only American on board, is the unique and thrilling account of that remarkable true adventure.
