The title of this book is STORIES OF THE WOODS. or ADVENTURES OF LEATHER-STOCKING
by James Fenimore Cooper, a book for boys.
It is illustrated from drawings by Darley and Printed in New York by James G Gregory, Publisher in 1863.
.A. Alvord, Stereotyper and printer.
The front page titled NOTE: This volume, like its companion, "Stories of the Sea," is composed of selections from several of the popular works of J. Fenimore Cooper. The adventures of the celebrated character known as "Leather-Stocking", it was believed would afford a varied, graphic, and intensely interesting series of narratives, well calculated to please juvenile readers. Tales of frontier-life have a well-known charm, to the old as well as the young, and no works in literature depict that life with so much spirit and vivid interest as the back-wood tales of Mr. Cooper. In making the selections for this volume, in order that each narrative or adventure should be complete in itself, it was necessary to somewhat liberally condense; otherwise, with the exception of the introductory paragraphs, the "Stories" are given in Mr. Cooper's own language."
The brown book is 6 7/8" x 4 3/4" and contains 345 pages.
Condition:
The top of the binding is bent from people pulling it off the shelf. The bottom of the binding is worn through and has a rip up 1 1/2" from the bottom. Two of the cover corners are worn through and the other two bent. The good news is the pages are attached strongly to the binding and all the pages are free from abuse, tears, marks. There are occasional browns on the paper showing age as it is 146 years old.
