This 2000 BBC production stars Daniel Radcliife, before he became the screen Harry Potter, as well as Dame Maggie Smith, also now part of Harry Potter history. Ian McKellen of Lord of the Rings fame also appears briefly but memorably as Creakle, the abusive headmaster. The cast is thus nicely familiar to younger viewers.

This tale is arguably the best-known coming-of-age story worldwide. The melancholy quality of betrayed innocence is wonderfully woven through this understated version of Dickens's tale, following him from start as a beloved child, to factory laborer in Victorian England, to his emergence as a young man.
