Fanny Kemble, a star of the London stage, journeyed to her American husband's 
plantation in 1838/39, and kept a day-by-day account of what she saw of the 
blacks of Georgia.  It was printed in the middle of the Civil War to counteract 
the pro-Southern sentiments of the English aristocracy.  This book portrays the 
mistreatment of the unfortunate blacks and describes in minute detail the 
clothing, medical care, illiteracy, diseases, food, religious life, and 
difficulties of the slaves, especially those of the negro women.  Interspersed 
with bitter comments on slavery are excellent word pictures of the natural life

This is an exceptionally nice copy of the First American Edition, and is the 
first issue, with word "about" repeated in error on page 314.  Original brown 
publisher's cloth binding, covers and spine unfaded. top of front hinge just 
starting, binding tight, interior clean and unfoxed.
