This book is a study of the aims, hopes, and experiences of a group of Italians who emigrated to Australia but returned home again to Italy between 1960 and 1970, period during which Italian settler departures amounted to more than 1/3 of settler arrivals.

Although Italian settlers have contributed very significantly to the development of Australia, the process of integration has not been easy, as the 138 for immigrants interviewed for this book revealed.  While some of the Italians recalled their years in Australia with affectionate nostalgia, they recalled also the probvlems they encountered -- language, housing, employment, discrimination, -- which kept so many of them on the3 fringe of Australian society, isolated and confused.

The Italians whose views form the substance of this book are now resettled permanently back in their native villages, in the southern province of L'Aquila and the northern province of Treviso.  They tell their own stories, of their struggles to establish themselves and to maintain family solidarity in a society which offered them little support yet was happy to exploit their labour. Their stories of individual successes and failures and the contrast they draw between the close-knit relationships of their native apese and the unsupportive and sometimes hostile attitudes of their suburban Australian neighbours not only reveal a great deal about the nature of migrant experience in Austrealia, but offer a unique slant on Australians and th Australian way of life. 

The underlying theme of this book is a pleas for a truly multicultural society: as one migrant put it, "What I have had to say will do some good if it helps those of us who remain in Australia."

The author gives a sympathetic and perceptive handling of a subject of importance to Australians from all nations, which must surely contribute to a greater understanding of one of Australia's largest migrant communities.

The book is in marvelous, practically as-new condition, hardbound in dust wrapper, slight sun fading of spine, maps on front and back end papers, 271 pages, index, tables, appendices, notes.
