![]() England 1850: The Empty Stone Farmhouse, Fine Study, Signedl
An ancient stone farmouse, somewhere in the English countryside, sensitively rendered by a mid-19th century English artist. The open door, swinging on its hinges, gives a sense of melancholy abandon. Lots and lots of carefully observed and rendered detail. This is more than an architectural study; despite the absence of people it rises to the level of a human document.
The artist has initialed his work "JG," lower right. A pencilled note on the back reads "by John Gallon." There are a couple of 19th century English landscape artists named Gallon, and perhaps John was part of their family or circle. In any case, it is a fine and sure hand.
Dimensions of the drawing are about 10.75 inches by 15 inches. There is a little creasing, some foxing, and a few weak spots in the paper, one about 1.5 inches above the chimney. Condition is otherwise good.
A desirable acquisition. Shipping in the U.S. will be $7.
