Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on September 25 & 26, 1997. POINTS OF VIEW was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. Dave Holland has always been a powerful creative force. His POINTS OF VIEW is a clear illustration of the bassist's ability to masterfully anchor an ensemble's feet to the earth while simultaneously propelling it into great heights of sonic exploration. His assembled quintet of younger yet highly accomplished sidemen ebbs and flows under the leader's guidance, forming an astounding unit capable of tremendous feats. All the while, Holland subtly works his magic under the surface until his mellow tones suddenly burst forth in a colorful explosion of inspiration. The group eases into the opening "The Balance," slowly finding their way into the Latin-ish groove before unleashing a torrent of swirling solos. In contrast, the swinging groove of "Mr. B," dedicated to the great bassist Ray Brown, is a laid-back stroll where vibist Steve Nelson, saxophonist Steve Wilson and Holland himself turn in superb traditionally-styled solo spots. Later, Holland opens "Metamorphos" with a down-and-dirty groove that sets the stage for a schizophrenic exploration in which trombonist Robin Eubanks shines. The samba fire of "Herbaceous" and the mysterious ballad "The Benevolent One" make for equally enjoyable performances by this multi-faceted ensemble.
