►JOHN HOWARD PAYNE ~ HIS FAVORITE QUOTE FROM SHAKESPEARE.  Fine Autograph Quotation unsigned, 1 page, oblong 8vo [3-9/16 in. x 6-9/16 in.], no place, undated.  The beloved author of “Home, Sweet Home” quotes favorite lines from Shakespeare’s immortal drama Henry VIII, Act 3, Scene 2: “Oh, how wretched / Is that poor man who waits on princes’ favours - / There is betwixt that smile he would aspire to / That sweet aspect of princes, and their ruin / More pangs and fear than wars or women have - / And when he falls he falls like Lucifer / Never to hope again.”  Undoubtedly written out at the special request of a fan.  Age-toned and tipped to a slightly larger album page.

American actor and playwright John Howard Payne [1791-1852] attained immortality with a single song, “Home, Sweet Home,” that appeared in his opera Clari, or, the Maid of Milan, first produced in 1823.

An actor and theater manager [1813-32] in Europe, he collaborated with Washington Irving in the plays Charles the Second [1824] and Richelieu [1826].  Twice the Consul at Tunis, he was the author, translator and adapter of more than sixty plays.
