This 32 note glockenspiel (also known as a set of bells) is a great pathway into learning instrumental music for only $159.99 with FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE LOWER 48 US STATES. The instrument comes with a backpack style carrying case, mallets, music rack, snare practice pad and drum sticks. Also available are the Mike Balter Custom Mallets (explained below).

MALLETS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE -- LISTEN FOR YOURSELF: The two ended mallets that come with the instrument are both too soft and too hard, and they're flimsy and imbalanced. That's why we came up with the Mike Balter Custom bell mallets (shown right). Warm sounding with birch handles, these mallets were custom designed by Rob Zollman and Mike Balter, and are simply the best mallets we've found for this type of instrument. Purchased separately they cost $21.99 (see our listing for Mike Balter mallets), but when you purchase the instrument on this listing, the price works out to only $16.99.

Now we have another type of mallet available. After we designed the regular mallet, we realized we needed another mallet that projects better from the stage. Hence the Mike Balter Custom Performance Mallet, which has a smaller ball than the stock mallet and therefore doesn't overwhelm the instrument. Plenty of volume without being obnoxious. Now the instrument sounds great when you practice with the regular Mike Balter mallets, and also projects very nicely from the stage with the Performance Mallets.

People are always asking us about the brand of our glockenspiels. We've seen, heard and sold several brands of 32 note glocks, and we've concluded that nearly all of them are the same, regardless of brand. Perhaps they are all made in the same factory in Taiwan or China, but, aside of price, we believe there is very little difference between one and another. So, when you see a 32 note glockenspiel in "Percussion Plus", "Rhythm Art", "CB", "Innovative" or "Musser", they're all similar. One may have a slightly heavier stand, or a sturdier music rack. Please contact us if you have information to the contrary, because we'd like to know it.

Glockenspiel is another word for song bells or orchestra bells. We have it on good authority that glocken comes from the German "glocken", which means bells, and spiel, which is the verb "to play" and also the noun "game". So glockenspiel could mean either play the bells or bell-game. In any case, the glockenspiel is part of the metallophone family, which also includes chimes (tubular bells), vibraphones and metal tube bells.

Often the glockenspiel is referred to as a xylophone, but it's not. The word xylophone translates to xylos = wood and phone = sound.  Types of xylophones include the concert, marching, pit xylophones, and also the marimba.
