The 2004 edition of Madden NFL Football includes several changes from the previous year. The new Playmaker Control allows players to quickly change, defensive coverage, and routes before and during the play.

In-game visuals have been enhanced with broadcast quality effects to create a smooth transition between on-field play and the play-calling interface.
