Ladies Victorian/Nouveau Gruen Wristlet Watch
Gruen emerged as one of the pre-eminent watch houses in the United States, producing accurate timepieces in stylish cases that became Jazz-Age darlings. Watch houses sought to outdo one another, carrying the wristwatch as a fashion statement to ever higher levels, but none seemed to touch the panache of Gruen. Founded in the United States in 1876, the legacy of Deitrich Gruen is a benchmark for watch designers to this day.
We're particularly fond of Gruen watches, as much for their style as their meticulous engineering. You will find few watch houses today that take the pride Gruen did three-quarters of a century ago. The look of their watches still quickens the pulse and nothing . . . nothing is as pleasant as a cleaned and timed Gruen movement ticking away. They are indeed great timekeepers.
This Late Victorian, early Art Nouveau Gruen certainly illustrates the pre Deco adage "Out with the curves, in with the geometric lines." Please take a moment to admire the sheer, ineffable beauty of this watch, from its classic octagonal gold-filled case to its magnificent -- and I mean magnificent -- "sunburst" or "engine-turned" gold dial: simply one of the most beautiful we've seen, complete with Roman numerals and perfectly blued "Breguet" hands.
Measuring approx. 25mm, not counting stem or lug rectangular wire-lug wristwatch, this exceedingly attractive, completely original example has a correctly marked, early Swiss movement that, while original, does NOT run. It must be cleaned, oiled and calibrated before being worn to the soiree.

INTERNATIONAL buyers must email us at the end of the auction so that we may calculate shipping costs and determine the method of shipping. Lower priced items (under $300), can usually be sent via USPS Priority International Mail or via Registered Mail. However, we MUST and WILL adhere to your country’s customs rules and regulations. If the item is not allowed via USPS, we must ship via Federal Express. Because of the unpredictable nature of today's mail, we cannot be held responsible for items lost or damaged by the post office or lost or held up in customs agencies and so require postal insurance for ALL overseas items.
