CONTENTS: The Sopranos, the long running HBO comedy hit, became so big that it spawned more than one celebrity memoir. Here is the latest, by the actor who played Ralph Cifaretto in the series. Sticking close to what he remembers best, this autobiography talks about the actor’s youthful years in 1950s and 1960s Hoboken (Sinatra's hometown) and Fort Lee, N.J. Though he has had quite a distinguished acting carerr, much of this book focuses on his eccentric Italian-American family and the stormy relationship and what he calls, shared misery, of his parents, Mommy and Monk. Joey's real father, Monk, was a factory worker with a weakness for gambling at the track who was later reborn as a hearse chauffeur for the local funeral parlor. Equal space goes to his relatives, girlfriends and childhood pals in the projects, a gang of piss-ant grade-schoolers who broke into railroad cars to steal whatever they found. As a youngster, his grades suffered, and by junior high,
he lived in a dyslexic bubble, but wound up righting himself by acting in school plays, eventually moving to regional theater and, finally, Hollywood. The chapters in this odd yet very funny memoir are titled after street addresses, such as 310 Jackson Street, 159 Palisade Avenue, etc. The addresses have meaning – they relate to each of the family's evictions or moves to yet another Garden State location. Readers meet colorful characters, including cousin Patty-Boy, local dogcatcher Uncle Popeye and wise guy Florie, who moves in after exiting the Atlanta Penitentiary. This book overflows with catchy street scenes, humorous encounters and the passion of a youth spent teetering on the edge of mob-dom. By his closing chapter, young Joey is attempting to break away from his clinging, cursing mommy, his chain-smoking mother, Mary, to become a big-time actor. It is the most memorable chapter of all. Overall, the book is written in a style that will be instantly familiar to Joey's numerous fans - tough,
outspoken, but with a charming side, too. It definitely stands as the fascinating story of one street-smart kid's convoluted journey from Hoboken to Hollywood. One warning, though: Joey peppers his prose with profanity and makes no apologies for it. It is entirely appropriate for the story he's telling (he came out of a time and place
where cursing was a part of everyday speech).
COMMENTS: Joe [Joey Pants] Pantoliano has become most well known as Ralph Cifaretto on The Sopranos. Before that, he was a successful actor whose filmography included more than sixty movies, including Memento, The Matrix, Bound, The Fugitive, The Goonies, Midnight Run, Empire of the Sun, and Risky Business. He was due to make his directorial debut with the upcoming Just Like Mona. He is a regular featured player on The Sopranos. Growing up, his own stepfather, Florie, had connections to the Genovese family,
and he himself helped run numbers as a kid in Hoboken, New Jersey.
