NO PLACE TO BE SOMEBODY ~Pulitzer Prize Play Script OOP

This is a rare FIRST EDITION PRINTING of an out-of-print play script. This was printed in the USA for the Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1969. There is a cover price of $2.45. This softcover edition has 115 pages and includes an introduction by the original producer - New York Shakespeare Festival's Joseph Papp. There are also 4 full-page photos of the original production.

Billed as a "Black-black Comedy," No Place To Be Somebody achieved two Pulitzer Prize firsts. It was the first off-Broadway play to win the Pulitzer, and Charles Gordone was the first African-American playwright to win the award.

Charles Gordone's play No Place to Be Somebody(1969) recounts the happenings in a New York City bar and the past fifteen years in the life of its African American owner Johnny Williams. As part of the larger theme of the thwarted ambitions of motley bar patrons consisting of ex-convicts, hustlers, prostitutes, politicians, and artists, Johnny, rankled by a history of poor race relations, eagerly awaits the prison release of his mentor Sweets Crane to initiate a racketeering scheme and to claim a share of the organized crime market. However, after ten years of incarceration, Sweets is a reformed old man tempered by poor health and religion.

CONDITION:

COVER - There is uneven yellowing and mild surface wear.

SPINE - The spine is tight. Every page is secure.

PAGES - A couple of pages have passages underlined and/or marked in brackets.

This script was studied, but it does not appear to have been used for a full staging. This is in very good condition. This is also an out-of-print title that will make a great addition to any collection.
