Short Story Classics (American) Edited by William Patten. Published by P. F. Collier & Son, New York. Copyright 1905 By P. F. Collier & Son. I believe this set to be first editions. Books measure 8 1/4 inches by 5 5/8 inches. Below is a description and details for each of the volumes.
Volume One - This volume is in very good condition with some minor wear along head and foot of spine, very light rubbing to cover, little rubbing of the gold gilt in title box on the spine. 331 pages. Frontispiece photo of Edward E. Hale opposite the title page. Pages are intact and clean with the only writing being a penciled question mark on a front ep. Binding straight and firm. Ten short stories by great authors such as Wahington Irving, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and others.
Volume Two - Volume is in very good condition with no noticeable flaws. The book pages start at page 335 and end at 687, the five volumes must be numbered as one, with each consecutive volume picking up where the last left off. Frontispiece photo of Bret Harte opposite the title page. Pages are intact and clean save for one small pencil mark on a front ep. Twelve short stories from such authors as George Parsons Lathrop, Thomas Nelson Page, Harold Frederic and others.
Volume Three - Volume is in very good condition with very minor wear head and foot of spine, a little rubbing to the gold gilt in the title box on the spine. Book pages numbered from page 691 through 1045. Frontispiece photo of Henry James. The title page, the copyright page and the table of contents page are inserted upside down, the rest of the pages are in their proper places. This would have occurred during the publishing of the book, kind of a different typo. The pages are intact and clean with no writings or other faults. Binding is straight and solid. Thirteen short stories from authors such as H.C. Bunner, Robert Grant, Lorimer Stoddard and other greats.
Volume Four - Volume is in very good condition with minor wear head and foot of spine, rubbing to gold gilt title box on the spine, spine cloth has darkened slightly. Book pages are numbered from 1049 through 1400. Frontispiece photo of Richard Harding Davis opposite the title page. Binding is straight and firm. Pages are intact and clean. Fifteen short stories from such authors as Jack London, Robert W. Chambers, Virginia Tracy and others.
Volume Five - Volume is in very good condition with minor wear head and foot of spine, rubbing to gold gilt title box on front cover and spine, the spine cloth has slightly darkened. Book pages are numbered from 1403 through 1758. Frontispiece photo of George Ade opposite the title page. Pages are intact and clean. Binding is straight and firm. The front ep is missing the top half of the page, looks like someone ripped it out. There is a crack starting between the copyright page and the table of contents page with a little netting showing through but still very much attached. Fifteen short stories from such authors as Max Adeler, Margaret Deland, Booth Tarkington and others. Also includes General Indexes.
A wonderful set of American short stories from many great authors. The set is in fantastic condition considering that they are over a hundred years old! I would say that these books have not been read or read very little. A stellar classic set to add to your library.
