SERJEANT MUSGRAVE'S DANCE by John Arden UK PLAY SCRIPT

This is a vintage paperback book with the script of an off-Broadway / UK play. This was printed in the USA for Grove Press. This copy is from the tenth printing of an edition that began in 1962. There is a printed cover price of $2.45 in the USA. This edition contains 13 black and white photographs from the original UK production.

In this deeply moving anti-war play, set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, a British sergeant and thee soldiers descend on a snow-bound mining town, in the north of England, which is gripped by a bitter strike. Although ostensibly on a recruiting mission, it soon becomes evident that the soldiers are deserters, and the sergeant, obsessed with the mission of impressing on the townspeople the futility and cruelty of war. Why they have chosen this town becomes clear in the final act, when the sergeant, in a public ceremony, unveils the skeleton of a fellow-soldier, killed in a senseless battle, who was from this poor mining village. Winner of several awards when it was first performed in England in 1958, Serjeant Musgrave's Dance was also highly praised by the English critics. "I regard it ... as the finest piece of contemporary literature that the has recently been offered in English theatre," wrote John Raymond.

CONDITION:

COVER - The back cover edge has a small tear (1/8"). There are mild surface dents and dirt marks.

SPINE - The spine is tight. Every page is secure.

PAGES - The pages are yellowing around the edges, but are otherwise clean. The page corners are still pretty sharp.

This script was carefully read. It was never used for an actual staging. This will easily hold up to several readings and/or stagings. This will make a great addition to any collection.
