Master Class

a play by Terrence McNally

Master Class

Genre: Drama
Length: Two Acts
Setting: John Golden Theatre: A Master
Class with Maria Callas
Cast: 3 Men, 3 Women

This is a paperback edition of an acclaimed Broadway play script. This was printed in the USA for Plume. This copy is from the first edition printing in December, 1995. There is a cover price of $8.95 in the USA. NOTE: The eBay stock info (above the auction photo) incorrectly lists the publisher as the author. This was written by Terrence McNally.

After stagings in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, Master Class opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre (where the play is set) in 1995. The production won three Tony Awards including Best Play. The play ran for almost 600 performances. The original cast included Tony winners Zoe Caldwell and Audra McDonald. Cast replacements included Patti LuPone and Dixie Carter. The National Tour was headlined by Faye Dunaway.

From the back cover:

"HIS BEST SCRIPT SO FAR - SPARKLING, RICH AND MERCURIAL."
- Wall Street Journal

Master Class is pyrotechnical theater - fireworks in a contained space where Maria Callas is brought back to life in Sturm and Drang. Inspired by a series of master classes the great diva conducted at Julliard toward the end of her career, this drama puts Maria Callas at center stage again as she coaxes, prods, and inspires students - "victims" she calls them - into giving the performances of their lives while revealing her own. As she slips off into memories, we experience her days at La Scala, her marriage to Meneghini, and her great doomed love for Aristotle Onassis. But the dazzling theatricality comes from Callas' emotional explosions, her cutting wit, and the soaring music as each student sings an aria that exposes the Divina's vulnerabilities...and her genius.

"A play of notable wit, humanity and insight...captures the transcendent experience....You share, for a moment, in the making of art."
- Philadelphia Enquirer

CONDITION:

COVER - There are mild surface dents and a corner ding.

SPINE - There is no crease. The spine is tight. The pages are secure.

PAGES - The pages are yellowing, but are otherwise clean with sharp corners.

This script was carefully read once or twice. It was never used for an actual staging. This is in excellent sturdy condition. It will make a great addition to any collection.

A note to international bidders -
People have asked why my international shipping rates are so high. The reason is simple. I purchase my postage for eBay auctions online through PayPal. The U.S. post office does not offer the cheaper First-Class International shipping rate online. The least expensive international shipping rate USPS offers online is Priority Mail International. You are paying a bit more, but you are getting a better shipping service.

Do you need it there faster?
PayPal auction payments made through a credit card or from a PayPal account clear instantly. I can ship those items immediately. If you use PayPal to transfer money from a bank account, it will take longer. I cannot ship until your payment clears. That can be several days later (depending on your bank).

Express Mail shipping is sometimes available for an extra fee. Just ask me.
