This is the stuff of which nightmares are made: squealing rusty hinges and howling voices amidst a frenzy of feedback and drum 'n' bass beats. But fear not, Matt Elliott (Bristol-based, Flying Saucer Attack accomplice) gives us an excruciatingly wonderful collage of percussion and atmospheric samples, some from the '20s. Initially it may seem soulless and esoteric, but familiarity brings great rewards.
The first track, "What To Do But Cry," takes a vocal sample from a traditional Turkish folk song that translates as "so much suffering." Inexplicable melodies lurk beneath the fantastic hurtling of the pitch-black graveyard chase-scene of "Corpses As Bedmates." "The Out Sound From Way In" sounds like terrified braying donkeys being pursued by a Sousa marching band, while a piano student practices delicate scales in the background. "The Star's Gone Out" is a delicious industrial cacophony of windswept factory clanks and rumblings. Post-exorcism, a moment of calm is provided by the intriguingly entitled "Donald Crowhurst." It's a simple looped motif, perhaps from a feeble harmonium, the final spiritual lament. Third Eye's formula is devilishly simple: a set of ghoulish variations of terrific material with changes in tempo and mood. A fantastic lo-fi feast, haunted by scrap-yard screams.
