POCKET SIZED
THIS WAS PRINTED PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR AND MATCHES WHAT SOMEONE IN THAT PERIOD WOULD HAVE CARRIED.
A great miniature for book, Bible, or antique collection.
As pictured, there is a section missing. It ends at Luke 42saying, ‘If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. 44They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.’*
This was purchased at an auction with Civil War items. The owner was a collector of historical items and this was said to have been carried by someone from the Shippensburg area that was in the Civil War; however, there isn't a legible name present and no note was found in here to say (W for William? I had purchased a book that had some letters from some that were in the Civil War; however, I listed and sold that book prior to my coming upon this one or I would have made an attempt to match this with a name). I was told the stain at the top of the pages was made by a bloody thumb, but it doesn't seem like a blood stain to me, but it does add a little character to this old leather Bible/New Testament. The pages feel like cloth rather than paper. Edges are all worn as pictured. Leather is in like condition with scuffs and bumps etc. I like the square that has little triangles on the back of the cover. Really does make one wonder if it did belong to a soldier could he have been sitting out in the woods awaiting battle with his knife cutting pieces of wood out of boredom or perhaps the back cover of this as some mark of his ownership?
