Publisher's Note

Centered squarely on the Negro-white conflict, both Dutchman and The Slave are literally shocking plays--in ideas, in language, in honest anger. They illuminate as with a flash of lightning a deadly serious problem--and they bring an eloquent and exceptionally powerful voice to the American theatre.

Dutchman opened in New York City on March 24, 1964, to perhaps the most excited acclaim ever accorded an off-Broadway production and shortly thereafter received the Village Voice's Obie Award. The Slave, which was produced off-Broadway the following fall, continues to be the subject of heated critical controversy.

This is a vintage softcover book with the scripts of two off-Broadway stage plays. This was printed in the USA for Morrow Quill Paperbacks. This copy is from the 10th printing of an edition that began in 1964. The exact printing date is not listed.

From the back cover:

"A man of shattering fury."
__ - New York Post

"Dutchman is designed to shock - its basic idea, its language and its murderous rage."
__ - The New York Times

Centered squarely on the Negro-white conflict, both Dutchman and The Slave are literally shocking plays - in ideas, in language, in honest anger. They illuminate as with a flash of lightning a deadly serious problem - and they bring an eloquent and exceptionally powerful voice to the American theatre.

CONDITION:

COVER - There are surface dents, dirt marks, and yellowing. There is a mark where the retail price sticker used to be. The back cover has a hole from a hole puncher.

SPINE - The spine is tight. Every page is secure.

PAGES - There is yellowing around the edges. A few passages are underlined in ink. A few pages have margin notes.

This script does not appear to have been used for an actual staging. It looks like it was studied for a literature class. This is in very sturdy condition. It will easily hold up to several readings and/or stagings.

A note to international bidders -
People have asked why my international shipping rates are so high. The reason is simple. I purchase my postage for eBay auctions online through PayPal. The U.S. post office does not offer the cheaper First-Class International shipping rate online. The least expensive international shipping rate USPS offers online is Priority Mail International. You are paying a bit more, but you are getting a better shipping service.

Do you need it there faster?
PayPal auction payments made through a credit card or from a PayPal account clear instantly. I can ship those items immediately. If you use PayPal to transfer money from a bank account, it will take longer. I cannot ship until your payment clears. That can be several days later (depending on your bank).

Express Mail shipping is sometimes available for an extra fee. Just ask me.
