Burn This

by Lanford Wilson

Burn This

Genre: Drama / Comedy
Length: Two Acts
Setting: A loft in a converted cast-iron
building, lower Manhattan.
Cast: 2 Men, 2 Women

This is a vintage softcover book that was printed in the USA for Hill and Wang. This is from the first edition printing in 1987. It contains the script of an acclaimed Broadway play. The cover photograph show actors John Malkovich and Tony Winner Joan Allen in the 1987 Los Angeles production.

From the back cover:

Commissioned by the Circle Repertory Company, Burn This first appeared at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in 1987 to near-universal praise. Set in the bohemian art world of downtown New York, this vivid and challenging drama explores the spiritual and emotional isolation of Anna and Pale, two outcasts who meet in the wake of the accidental death by drowning of a mutual friend. Their determined struggle toward emotional honesty and liberation - by no means guaranteed at the play's ambiguous end - exemplifies the strength, humor, and complexity of all of Lanford Wilson's work and confirms his standing as one of America's greatest living playwrights.

"From his earliest plays to his latest, Burn This, Lanford Wilson has been firmly committed to the free expression of the individual spirit, no matter how nonconformist or even prodigal that spirit may seem to be...In the sense that it deals with lonely and displaced characters, Burn This is in the Wilson tradition. Where it breaks dramatic ground for the author is in its passion...Mr. Wilson exposes deep uncauterized emotional wounds - and offers no salve. His unlikely romantic couple come together at the end of the play, but it would be precipitous to think of it as a happy ending. The affair is a daring - and even questionable - step for the characters, Anna, a dancer-choreographer, and Pale, a wild man and certifiable outsider."
___ - Mel Gussow, The New York Times

Burn This is neither a straight play or a gay one (or perhaps it's the first play that's truly both straight and gay), a comedy that laughs at its own tragic roots, a love story in which the lovers are scared to death of one another, a play about art in which the strongest sensibility belongs to a character who looks upon artists as frauds...The play has a voracious vitality and an almost manic deterimation to drive right into the highest voltage that life can register."
___ - Jack Kroll, Newsweek

CONDITION:

COVER - There are mild surface dents. There are dull spots in the glossy finish.

SPINE - The spine is tight. Every page is secure.

PAGES - The pages have very mild yellowing, but are otherwise clean. The page corners are still sharp.

This script was never used for an actual staging. It was carefully read, and then boxed away in storage for decades. This will make a great addition to any collection.

A note to international bidders -
People have asked why my international shipping rates are so high. The reason is simple. I purchase my postage for eBay auctions online through PayPal. The U.S. post office does not offer the cheaper First-Class International shipping rate online. The least expensive international shipping rate USPS offers online is Priority Mail International. You are paying a bit more, but you are getting a better shipping service.

Do you need it there faster?
PayPal auction payments made through a credit card or from a PayPal account clear instantly. I can ship those items immediately. If you use PayPal to transfer money from a bank account, it will take longer. I cannot ship until your payment clears. That can be several days later (depending on your bank).

Express Mail shipping is sometimes available for an extra fee. Just ask me.
