Here for sale is a precious book that was my father's. It's called The Young Man's Guide and it's by Father Francis Xavier Lasance, a well known and devout priest that wrote some of the most eloquent prayer books for Catholics.
I believe this is a first edition, Jan. 3, 1910 Benziger Bros. The covers are semi flexible leather or leatherette with gold lettering on the front and spine. The Imprimatur is John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York, and the Nihil Obstat is Remy Lafort. There are 782 pages.
In the front of the book is written my father's name and the school he was sent to in Quincy, Illinois. This was written and gifted in 1916, by my grandmother, when my father left the farm to attend and board at St. Francis Solanus College in Quincy. In 1917 the school was called Quincy College and is now Quincy University. It was a school and seminary when my father attended it. He received the approximation of a 9th grade education here, as it was more of a high school than a college at that time.
As you can see, the age of the book, and the probablity that it's a first edition, is well documented.
The book is in very good condition for age. I glued the spine that had come loose, which isn't apparent. There is a paper shadow caused by a holy card that was given at a retreat by a priest from Carthage Illinois. It's contemporary.
The Preface indicates this book is the second, after a similar one written for young girls. It says it is styled after a German work "Hinaus ins Leben", by Coelestin Munk OSB, a Benedictine of the famous Abbey of Maria Einsiedeln, Switzerland.
The first half deals with the moral and spiritual development of the young man and the second half is the Mass and devotions. Latin is used.
There are no pages missing or loose. The edges are gilt. Some yellowing of pages, but not inordinately soiled. Some pages have been fingered more than others. Overall this has been well kept. No page marker ribbons, as made.
Many, many prayers, poems, litanies, benedictions, ejaculations, daily prayers, devotions to Our Lady, emphasis on Saints Aloysius, Anthony, Stanislaus, Alphonsis Liguori and more. A very comprehensive book for young men and others.
