When I first began reading this, I thought this was a Bible that was translated by someone else.  For some reason, ok, I am really curious, I continued to read.  It wasn't the same translation of the Bible that I had read.  This was history!  A light bulb went off in my brain.  This is like reading history, the events that took place but are the events including events from the Bible!  It is a really interesting read.

Another interesting point of this book is about one sentence.  It is the sentence in the section about Pilot.  There are multiple educated people that have comments in this book about that sentence and its subject and background.  Quite thought provoking!  I won't spoil it for you, I thought it great that I could read this book like a treasure hunt myself!

Flavius Josephus was a 1st century Jewish historian and apologist of priestly and royal ancestry who survived and recorded the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70.

A unique insight into life in Palestine under Roman rule and its interpretation of events in the Old Testament preceded by a short Life of Josephus!

Just as pictured.

Josephus introduced himself in Greek as "Joseph, son of Matthias, a Hebrew by race, a priest from Jerusalem" and fought the Romans in the First Jewish-Roman War of 66-73 as a Jewish military leader in Galilee.  Josephus surrendered to the Roman forces invading Galilee in July 67. He became a prisoner and provided the Romans with intelligence on the ongoing revolt. The Roman forces were led by Flavius Vespasian and his son Titus, both subsequently Roman emperors. In 69 Josephus was released.  He became a negotiator with the defenders in the Siege of Jerusalem in 70.  In 71 he arrived in Rome in the entourage of Titus, becoming a Roman citizen and Flavian client. In addition to Roman citizenship he was granted accommodation in Vespasian's former home, land in conquered Judea, and a pension. It was while in Rome, and under Flavian patronage, that Josephus wrote all of his known works.

Josephus offers information about individuals, groups, customs and geographical places. His writings provide a significant, extra-biblical account of the post-exilic period of the Maccabees, the Hasmonean dynasty and the rise of Herod the Great. He makes references to the Sadducees, Jewish High Priests of the time, Pharisees and Essenes, the Herodian Temple, Quirinius' census and the Zealots, and to such figures as Pontius Pilate, Herod the Great, Agrippa I and II, John the Baptist, James (the brother of Jesus) and a brief and highly disputed reference to Jesus himself. Along with Philo of Alexandria, he is an important source for studies of immediate post-Temple Judaism and early Christianity.

In his own words, "Now I have undertaken the present work, as thinking it will appear to all the Greeks worthy of their study; for it will contain all our antiquities, and the constitution of our government, as interpreted out of the Hebrew Scriptures. And indeed I did formerly intend, when I wrote of the war,  to explain who the Jews originally were, - what fortunes they had been subject to, - and by what legislature they had been instructed in piety, and the exercise of other virtues, - what wars also they had made in remote ages, till they were
unwillingly engaged in this last with the Romans..."
