GILES, GILES, & FRIPP – The Brondesbury Tapes (1968). Voiceprint VP 235. UK release. NEW CD. Issued in 2001. With the exception of the first track, which dates from late 1967, these recordings were made in 1968 at Peter Giles’ home studio. Comes with a 16-page informative/photo insert booklet. MUSICIANS: Michael Giles, Peter Giles, Robert Fripp, Al Kirtley, Ian McDonald, and Judy Dyble. TRACKS: Hypocrite (recorded at the Beacon Royal Hotel, 1967), Digging My Lawn (1), Tremelo Study In A-Major (Spanish Suite), Newly Weds, Suite No. 1, Scrivens, Make It Today (1), Digging My Lawn (2), Why Don’t You Just Drop In (1), I Talk To The Wind (1), Under The Sky (1), Plastic Pennies, Passages Of Time, Under The Sky (2), Murder, I Talk To The Wind (2, w/Judy Dyble), Erudite Eyes, Make It Today (2), Wonderland, Why Don’t You Just Drop In (2), and She Is Loaded. DESCRIPTION: These songs, recorded on a four track reel to reel as demo tapes, reflect the journey from the Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp and onwards to just before the formation of the first line-up of King Crimson. The disc begins with the trio (drums, bass and guitar respectively) then adds Ian Macdonald (sax, flute, etc.), and, finally, Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention vocalist) for a few tunes before Dyble moves on and plans are laid for Greg Lake to replace Peter Giles and for King Crimson to begin. The collection starts out with a suprisingly creepy little track called Hypocrite, which is the oldest surviving commercial recording to feature Mr. Fripp on guitar, dating from 1967. And while it may not be sonically rich the track still packs a bit of a whallop once you realize how the recording was made, and the acidic bitterness of the song's lyric is hard to not snicker at with sadistic glee. The highlight of these sessions is the inclusion of the long lost Judy Dyble voiced version of I Talk To The Wind, previously only available on a now deleted 2 record Crimson compilation from 1977, and here lovingly re-mastered to make it sound like an actual song. You also get two very different mixes of Cheerful Insanity era favorites Newly-Weds, Digging My Lawn, a very different version of Fripp's Erudite Eyes, a 2nd MacDonald/Giles vocalized I Talk To The Wind (which is nowhere near as nice as Judy's), as well as the bonus tracks released on the remastered Cheerful Insanity album, Under The Sky (2 versions), She Is Loaded, and 2 versions of the puzzling (Why Don't You Just) Drop In, a staple of the early live Crimson shows which Fripp stubbornly continued to re-work until the 1971 Islands album, retitled The Letters. Knowing Robert’s later penchant for discipline, on these recordings they were too busy rehearsing to be cool. Other standout tracks on this collection include Wonderland, an amazing Fripp scribed jazz/rock composition featuring a rare early pre-Belew instance of Fripp allowing someone else to play lead guitar (and a mind-boggling doo-wop vocalized section that is absurdly perfect), a bizarre bit of lounge-jazz pop called Make It Today (2 versions) which would have made a perfect pop single if anyone had been smart enough to release it, the priceless Judy Dyble version of I Talk To The Wind with it's bummer clarinet notes and tinny lead guitar riffs, and of course the aforementioned Drop In cuts. You also get to hear Fripp’s guitar craft sound in it's embryonic pre-infancy twenty years before he came up with a name for it. In other words you will want to listen to this again rather than hide it in the closet. Though I enjoy The Cheerful Insanity album I find myself popping this disc in the player more often; not to mention Peter Giles linernotes make for an interesting read while the disc is playing. Highly enjoyable and unquestionably recommended!

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS:
I have been shipping records and CDs around the world for over 25 years, so purchase with confidence. Items are shipped in professional corrugated mailers. Payment by credit card via Paypal, must be in US $, (to: grooversparadise@charter.net). Ebay is changing over to payment only via Paypal or credit cards via Paypal. If you can not meet my payment schedule please e-mail me with your needs. I only ask that you keep me informed. All packages are shipped via first class mail international (air); this is the least expensive method of shipping internationally, but does not necessarily meet all the conditions of Paypal’s buyer protection plan. First Class Mail International does not offer tracking. If security is a major concern then please request Registered Mail, available upon request and at your expense, this is the least expensive method of meeting the conditions of Paypal’s buyer protection plan; actual postal fee for registration is $11.50 in addition to the shipping total (required on all bids/purchases totaling $100 or more; this will be included with the invoiced shipping total). Priority Mail International and Express Mail International are available upon your request and at your expense. If you have any questions please e-mail me. Air Letter Post is now called First Class Mail International, but the method of shipping and delivery remains the same.
Save On Shipping:
International customers can save on shipping by having their CD items shipped with out jewel cases (digipaks, mini-jackets, and certain multi disc jewel case sets must be shipped whole); this excludes Canada and Mexico (your rates are cheaper already). A minimum purchase of 2 CDs is required. Fees for shipping without jewel cases: 2 CDs = $6.50; for each additional disc add $1.00. CD discs are placed in CD envelopes and include all inserts which are placed inside of a plastic sleeve; all items are then placed inside of a corrugated box (the same size that I ship 7” records in, as I have had problems with bubble insulated envelopes; this box holds approximately 10 x 7” records so I am able to put packing material completely around the CD items inside the box). Shipping is via first class mail international. Please e-mail me with your request before making payment and I will send you an Ebay invoice with the correct shipping amount.

HANDLING TIME:
Packages are usually shipped in less than 72 hours. NOTE: This is not the same thing as delivery time, which begins once a package is turned over to the post office; averaging 3-7 business days for US delivery and 5 days to 3 weeks for international delivery (Italy seems to take even longer often times). International delivery is largely determined on how long it takes your local customs to process its mail. Due to my full time job and rotating days off, I ship two to three times per week as my schedule allows. Most packages are shipped within 48 hours of receiving a confirmed payment. I will confirm receipt of payment and shipping date via my personal e-mail, adjust your filters accordingly. If you do not hear from me within the first three days after your payment, most likely my attempts to e-mail you have failed. Please keep me posted on your payment plans or any special requirements/needs of your purchase.
RETURN POLICY:
Please e-mail me with specific details and I will get back to you with your options. I ask that if there is a problem with the item that you contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense. Any refund (refunded to your Paypal account in US $ or via the same method as your payment), exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyers choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description.
NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:
US Customers: Please wait at least two weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. Packages are not shipped with confirmation; this service is optional and available upon request at your expense, e-mail me before making payment so I can invoice you accordingly. It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.
INTERNATIONAL Customers: Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With first class mail international my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE: Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
MULTI-ITEM PURCHASERS:
Multi-bid winners/purchasers: If you combine various formats such as LPs, 7" singles, and CDs, please wait for my eBay invoice for the shipping total before making payment. For example, US customers purchasing an LP with a 7” single and/or CD, as LPs ship via media mail, your package will ship as media mail. All international purchases are shipped via first class mail international so discounting will be determined by weight. Shipping discounts apply only to multi-item purchases that are paid for in one single payment and shipped in a single package.
