Dreams Come True includes: Miwa Yoshida. Though SING OR DIE is the first US release by the duo of songwriter/producer Masato "King Masa" Nakamura and singer Miwa, Dreams Come True had previously released eight other albums in its native Japan. The facile comparison would be to Cornelius or Pizzicato Five, but Dreams Come True lacks those projects' ironic viewpoints and fondness for quoting and recontextualizing pop history. Dreams Come True does share P5's fondness for kitschy disco strings. The duo's real contemporaries are the British acts that straddle the line between pop and dance-St. Etienne, Dubstar, Alisha's Attic, and the Spice Girls. Frothy songs like "Dandelion Hill," "This Is Not Love At All," and the near-psychedelic "Moonlight" bop along happily, while such ballads as "Will To Love" and "Marry Me?" neatly sidestep the danger of mawkishness. SING OR DIE is an extremely entertaining example of disposable pop, as fluffy and insubstantial as cotton candy and approximately as good for you.
