BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE 1909 J. KNOWLES HARE SMALL OVAL FRAMED VICTORIAN LADY IN HAT, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Known for his drypoint etching portraits and his magazine cover illustrations.

SIGNED AND COPYRIGHT DATED AND ON THE BRASS FRAME, ON THE BACK OF THE BRASS FRAMES HINGE, IS DATED MAY 19, 1909. SEE PHOTO'S.

THIS IS ONE OF THE DOZENS OF ART PIECES THAT HAVE BEEN PACKED AWAY FOR THE LAST 50+ YEARS.

J. KNOWLES HARE (1884 - 1947)
Glamour print and calendar artist (though just as good with pups and kids!), usually in pastel, but also in pencils and oils. Covers for Woman's Home Companion, American Magazine, This Week, Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, Ladies' Home Journal, Photoplay, Modern Priscilla, Harper's Weekly. Ads for Gossard Corrset, Palmolive, Elgin, Packar's. His lovely wife, Gladys Granger, was his main model.

Known for his drypoint etching portraits and his magazine cover illustrations, John Knowles Hare was born in Montclair, New Jersey. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York. In the early 1900s he had designed many magazine covers and he also worked in drypoint etching, one of the more famous being "Sympathy.". J. Knowles Hare's Father was a photojournalist, Jimmy Hare.

His photo is in an ad for Corona Typewriters in 1918.

The artist was a frequent contributor of saccharine portraits of 1920's-type young women for the covers of "The Saturday Evening Post" and "The Country Gentleman" magazines. He also was responsible for the covers for Woman's Home Companion, American Magazine, This Week, Collier's, Ladies' Home Journal, LaGatta , Photoplay, Harper's Weekly, Modern Priscilla Magazine, McCall's, Delineator and the Red Cross Magazine. He designed many Ads including those for Gossard Corsets in 1924, Palmolive, Elgin, and Packar's. Santa-Coke, Better Homes and Gardens and the Campbell Kids. His wife Gladys Granger was his model for many of his magazine covers.
