Detailed item info
Synopsis
Michael D'Antonio re-examines the legacy of baseball owner Walter O'Malley, who still remains a vilified figure in New York more than 50 years after he notoriously absconded to Los Angeles with the city's beloved Brooklyn Dodgers. D'Antonio's illuminating history provides the context for the controversial move that many fans are lacking, most particularly the role of infamous city planner Robert Moses in forcing O'Malley's hand. While this book may not entirely cure the pains of the aging Brooklyn Dodger faithful, it may at least serve as a soothing balm, and it will surely be a useful guide to inform current and upcoming generations of Los Angeles Dodger fans about the team's ancestry in the east.

Industry reviews
"With unprecedented access to some 30,000 previously unseen documents, photographs and artifacts from O'Malley's life, D'Antonio clarifies or, in some cases, debunks long-held beliefs about the man some New York critics have compared to Hitler and Stalin."
 (03/15/2009)

"This is a wonderfully readable, insightful, and--for anyone interested in baseball history--important biography of a man who forever changed the course of the game in America." (starred review)
 (03/15/2009)

"[U]nprecedented access to the family's archives gave D'Antonio an insider's perspective; in this nuanced, but decidedly pro-O'Malley work, he concludes there's much to admire about the owner, just as much remains misunderstood about his actions."
 (03/21/2009)

"Michael D'Antonio['s]...FOREVER BLUE...[is] the first full treatment of [Walter] O'Malley's long and prosperous life....[and] O'Malley...could not have asked for a more faithful biographer."
