A METAL LATHE IS REQUIRED for SOME PROJECTS

CONTENTS:

1. Solenoid engine - made from automotive solenoid.

2. Electric Motor - a simple electric motor built with wood & nails.

3.  Elbow Engine - steam or air powered.  A six-cylinder engine.  The pistons are paired into 3 elbows that bridge 2 cylinder barrels. 

4. Candle Engine - the flame of a common candle is the sole source of power - no boiler - no displacement chamber, no explosion within the cylinder itself.  Essentially a model of the heavy-duty, horizontal-type gasoline engine, except for the hinged valve mounted on the cylinder head.

5. Steam Engine - this combination unit comprises an alcohol-fired boiler fitted with a safety valve, a piston-type engine and a turbine.  With simplicity of construction and use of stock materials anyone can make these engines.

6. Vertical Steam Engine with Reverse Gear - Uses the link-motion reverse gear perfected by George Stephenson for his famous locomotive, The Rocket, in the 1830s.  The engine is a double acting noncondensing one that exhausts directly into the air with the familiar puff-puff of a donkey engine or steam shovel. 

7. Rotary-Valve Steam Engine - If you have access to a metal lathe, this two-cylinder vertical marine model is an easy weekend project. No castings required.  All parts are machined from raw metal.

8. One-Lunger Steam Engine - A single-acting piston-valve-type reciprocating steam engine with a 1/2-in. bore and 5/8-in. stroke.  Machining has been kept to a minimum - and the boiler is literally a "pipe" to assemble: it's made of standard pipe fittings.  Fired with a blowtorch, it generates enough steam in two minutes to set the pistons whirring.
