MT LION/cougar Fetish, P marble, COLIN WEEKA, Zuni

Up for auction is an outstanding Mountain Lion fetish carving by Zuni Pueblo artisan Colin Weeka.  This incedibly detailed piece is about 1&3/4 inches long, just under 2 inches high, and 5/8 inch wide at the base.  It is carved from a predominantly tan piece of Picasso marble with a fascinating brown and gray matrix.  A beautiful piece!  This would make an outstanding gift for a special person!

This is a Native American hand-carved item and comes from the Zuni Pueblo in northern New Mexico.  The artist has initialed the piece on the bottom along with the word "Zuni".  Colin is a listed artist in the reference book: Zuni Fetishes & Carvings by Kent McManis.

In Zuni tradition, each animal is believed to have inherent powers or qualities that may aid the owner of a fetish carved in the image of that animal.  The mountain lion represents the power of leadership, the ability to lead without insisting that others follow.
